Padmashri Dr. AVVAI NATARAJAN, is a renowned scholar in Tamil Language and literature is a force to reckon with in the artistic and cultural scene of Tamil Nadu State today. His popularity is not restricted to just Tamil Nadu; he is a popular scholar among the Tamil speaking Diaspora across the world. His career continues to be distinguished having served and continuing to serve in the faculties of notable institutions of higher learning for more than three decades.

He is an acclaimed orator, having skillfully perfected the art of speeches his own particular instrument of communication. His extempore orations often charged which flourishes of richly luxurious diction and data enthralls and delights audiences everywhere, while at the same time offering altogether fresh thought-provoking perceptions of the subject at hand which are construed as cherishable literary creations.

Born on April 24, 1936 in Cheyyaru Village in Tiruvannamalai District of rural Tamil Nadu, his rise to the top in the field of literature has been an example for many. He is a Ph. D in Tamil and completed his M.A and M. Litt., along the way to his Doctorate. Avvai Natarajan has a profound background by being the son of the great scholar –commentator Siddhantha Kalanidhi Professor Avvai Doraiswami Pillai who is always hailed as the prince commentator of Tamil Classics and Saiva Siddhantha works.

As a widely travelled man both in India and abroad, the influence shows itself in his own open mind and pleasant demeanor. In order to utilize his unique expertise in the fields of Language, Art and Culture, the Government of Tamilnadu appointed him as the Secretary to Government in the Department of Language Development and Culture in 1984.

He is the first non- IAS officer to be appointed as the Founder Secretary to Government for language and cultural affairs in Independent India. Since then he has been carrying out his duties and responsibilities at the helm with characteristic flair and dedication. As an executive, he is a man of action, laying great stress on the need for promptitude and thoroughness in all matters. His benign temperament and persuasive manner have endeared him to one and all during his stint as a successful public relations magnate. Even with such remarkable academic and administrative past, Dr. Avvai Natarajan has not shown the slightest wish to withdraw into the world of retirement, a respect well-earned as the Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University at Tanjavur, Tamilnadu, India, in 1995. He remains actively involved in several International cultural projects, travelling often to foreign institutions of learning and centers and cultural activity.

He has been a recipient of numerous awards; the Kalaimamani and Anna Awards of the Government of Tamil Nadu are just of couple of them to name. Recently he was awarded as the most eminent Tamil by Ceylon Kambar Acadmy. He has been presented Padmashri award by the Government of India a singular one for Tamil scholar-Savant. He remains actively involved in several international cultural projects, visiting institutions of higher learning and centers of cultural activity in India and abroad. He has been recently awarded the grand old Tamil Savant by Dina thanthi a renowned Tamil Daily.

He is happily married to Dr. Mrs. Tara Natarajan, the former Dean of Madurai Medical College - an eminent pediatrician and they are blessed with three sons, among them two are medical doctors and the one a doctorate holder in Tamil Language and Literate.

Dr. Murugesan Ponnavaikko was born in 1946 at Sengamedu village, South Arcot district, Tamil Nadu. He graduated in Electrical Engineering from Guindy Engineering College in 1969 and obtained his M.Sc.(Engg.) in Power Systems from the same institution in 1972. He received his Ph.D. degree in Optimal Distribution System Planning from I.I.T.(Delhi) in 1983. He is specialized in Operation Research and has contributed original methods for Distribution System Optimization.

He started his career from Tamil Nadu State Electricity Board in 1972, immediately after completing his P.G. degree programme. From there he moved to different organisations including Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore), Southern Regional Electricity Board (Bangalore), Bharath Heavy Electricals Limited (New Delhi) and Rural Electrification Corporation (New Delhi) from 1972 till 1984. In 1984, he was deputed to ECCO (Electrical Construction Company), Libya as an Advisor and Secretary to the Board. After serving for 2 years at that capacity at ECCO, he moved to the Higher Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Hoon, Libya as a Visiting Professor in 1986 and served there till 1989.

From 1989 till Jan.1995, he was serving as Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, initially at Mookambigai College of Engineering, Tiruchirappalli, and then at Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli. While at Mookambigai College of Engineering he devised Syllabus for M.Phil. (Comp.Sc.) for the Summer Sequential Programme, instituted at Bharathidasan University and conducted the course for the first time in the University as its Course Director and continued offering the same course while at Regional Engineering College. He later served as Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science at the Crescent Engineering College, Chennai from 1995 till 2000. From July 2000. He served as the Director, at the level of Vice-Chancellor at the Tamil Virtual University from July 2000 till August 2003. From September 2003 he was serving as the Director, Research and Virtual Education Directorate at the SRM University till June 2007. From July 2007 he was serving as the Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu till July 2010. From July 2011 he was serving as Vice-Chancellor, SRM University till August 2014. He is at present the Vice-Chancellor, Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER).

He was a pioneer in the country to promote energy conservation techniques using his models for improving the Distribution systems of the State Electricity Boards through Rural Electrification Corporation, New Delhi and his models are known as "Ko Models". He is also a pioneer in promoting Virtual Education in the country. His contributions to the Tamil Virtual University of the Tamil Nadu Government, as its founder Director are commendable. He made commendable contributions to the community as Vice-Chancellor at Bharathidasan University by introducing Skill based academic curriculum, making the graduates employable and a number of empowerment programs for the community, including differently abled persons, for the economic development of the people living in the area under the jurisdiction of the University. He functioned as a unique Vice-Chancellor, making Bharathidasan University as a model University.

He has made tremendous service to the academic community through SRM University. He has been responsible to establish a Research Directorate in 2003 at SRM University which has seeded for the growth Research potential at the University and resulted in a large number of Research paper publications, patents and innovative product developments like SRM Nano satellite, Nickel nano dots for computer memory, herbal based Siddha/Ayurvedic medicines, etc. He is responsible for setting up of a Nanotechnology Research Center, Earthquake Research Center, Learning through Discovery lab and an Inter disciplinary School of Indian System of Medicines at SRM University. He is also responsible to establish Thamizh Perayam ( Tamil Academy) for the promotion of Tamil culture, recognition of Tamil scholars, publication of rare Tamil books and development of Tamil computing software and systems.

He has also served as Member of the Sub-Committees constituted by UGC & AICTE for improving the standard of Higher Education in the Country. His contributions to the Committee on 'National Initiatives on Engineering Experimentation', constituted by the AICTE , as an Expert Member are commendable.

He was Vice-Chairman, IEEE Madras Section, for two terms, 2004, and 2005; and Chairman, IEEE Madras Section, for two terms, 2006, and 2007. Currently he is the Chairperson of IEEE India Council for the year 2013 and 2014.

He has been a Consultant, Researcher, Teacher, Academician and Administrator in the Industries and Public Sectors and academic Institutions contributing in the areas of Power Systems and Computer Engineering for over 4 decades. He has published over 110 technical papers, 22 Books and worked on more than 40 research projects. His areas of interest are Power System Studies, Computer Science & Engineering, Curriculum Planning and Tamil Computing.

Contributions and Achievements
  1. Developed and dedicated Tamil Virtual University (TVU) to the world community as the Founder Director of TVU, a unique Virtual Education platform for learning Tamil using internet and web technology.
  2. Contributed Original Mathematical tools (O.R. Techniques) and Computer Methods for optimal distribution system planning. My models are known as "KO Models" in the literature.
  3. Developed Nomograms for Distribution System Analysis and Planning.
  4. Designed and Developed new courses in Computer Science and Engineering both at UG and PG levels for Bharathidasan and Madras University.
  5. Developed Laboratories such as Parallel Computing and Distributed Systems, Multimedia Computing, Internet Computing Labs, etc. in different Engineering Colleges.
  6. Established Intranet and campus–wide network with Fibre Optics as backbone in the campus at Crescent Engineering College.
  7. Established a OFC based campus-wide network with wireless internet facilities, upgrading the computing facilities with all platforms, including Mac, Sun solaris, Linex, Unix and Windows and high-end servers, storage devises, desktops, workstations and network switches.

Dr.K.P.Thooyamani is Pro Vice-Chancellor of Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER), Chennai, Tamilnadu. Born in 1954, he graduated Bachelor of Engineering in 1977 from TNAU, Coimbatore. After serving as Junior Engineer for six months and as Assistant Professor for two years, he went to Canada in 1979 for post graduation studies at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon. He completed Master of Engineering (1982) & PhD (1986) in the area of Computer Simulation and Engineering from the University. He returned to India in 1987 and worked as Software Engineer in computer industry for four years. During the period, he developed a numbers of Software Packages for Commercial Applications, Academic Applications and Research studies.

He joined as Professor, Dept of Computer Science and Engineering in 1990 and had held various senior positions such as Head of Department, Principal, Dean (Computer Science & Engineering), Dean (Academics), Dean (Research & Development), and Dean (Post Graduate Studies) in various private engineering colleges and Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER) for about 13 years. He had taught a whole range of Computer Science and Engineering courses and had been consistently rated as a good teacher. His deep concern for students is well known. During this period, he completed MBA (Finance) in 1995 from the University of Madras, Chennai.

He has several publications in National and International Journals in the field of Computer Science and Engineering, and Management. He is Fellow of the Institute of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (IETE) and Life Member in Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) and Computer Society of India (CSI).

He joined as Principal, Bharath Institute of Science and Technology in August, 2000. He took over as Registrar of Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER) in February, 2003. In June 2008 he was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER) for a period of 6 years. He was responsible for extensive curricular revisions in B.Tech / M.Tech Programmes of the Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER) with the introduction of many innovative features. He is deeply concerned about quality and reach of engineering education in India.
